Would working for a law firm unrelated to your specialty area be ok?

On August 1, 2009 / By Real Estate Law Help / In Real-Estate-Law-Firms

My specialty area is zoning, land use, environment, and real estate.

I got an email from a lawyer about possibly working for his bankruptcy, debt collection law firm.

I know nothing about bankruptcy and debt collection…is that a good or bad idea to working for something I know nothing about but can’t find a job for the other?

sure why not…I am a history and education major and I have previous work experiences that are not related to my career focus - secondary teaching and high school librarian. Although I am currently working at a job that is related to my career choice, which is teaching kids, I have had past jobs that are unrelated to my career choice; for instance, I have worked as a sales rep and as a waitress - both of which are not related to any of my career choices (secondary teaching and librarian)…Instead of thinking that the job is irrelevent to your specialty, think of it as an opportunity to practice and develop your skills that are looked for by all employers, such as: interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, how hard you work, etc…
Not only do you need skills but you do need lots of good recomendation from your other employers ( no matter what job it is that you have done). Employers are always looking at your past work to determine your eligiblity; they want to know you are a hardworker, dependable etc….One of the ways they will know this is if you have good recomendation from your previous employers…

You did Law right? well how is bankruptcy law firm any differnt? It seems like a good place to gain experiences…

Don’t wait around for your idea job (it’s not going to come to you), just dive into working at anything, any job you can find (differnet law firms, whatever…) just as long as you get exoerience and employers who would be glad to be one of your refrences….My first couple of jobs did not involve working with kids or books, but I worked my way to the top!!!!!! Now I am working with/teaching kids and I love what I do!

Although this isn’t your specialty, maybe this job will open new doors of opportunities for you…

    good luck
