Can you back out of a contract after signing it on real estate?

My mother-in-law signed on her house with the buyer and after signing the buyer backed out of the contract.
Oh and it was a week later that they backed out.

    That depends on whether or not there were contingencies attached to the offer.

    There are a lot of "depends" with this question… If there is an inspection clause in the contract (which most do) the buyers can back out during the "inspection period" with no penalty.

    Depends on how the contract was written.

    It must be a state-approved real estate sales contract.

    If it was, then the answer is no.
