DBA’s for Real Estate Brokers, legal name vs. operating name?

On April 22, 2009 / By Real Estate Law Help / In Oregon-Real-Estate-Law

I’m in need of some answers. I will be a newly licensed Real Estate agent/broker this next week. State (Oregon) law requires that you are licensed under your LEGAL name. My concern is that I am getting married in 4 months and my last name will be changing. The first part of your Real Estate career is getting your name out there and known. I’m trying to avoid giving one name to the public and then changing it months later. Not to mention, business cards, my website, etc.

Is there anyway to operate under my future last name WITHOUT legally changing it. (As then my maiden name, would be my married name.)

The State is giving me run-around, ambiguous answers (and not ones that I really want to here.)

Can someone help me!!??

No. You see, the State is giving you answers you don’t want to hear, because they are telling you it’s not possible. Right? Well, guess what, it’s not. If they require legal name, then you have three choices:

    1) Change your name now to your eventual married name.

    2) Start with your maiden name and change it after four months. It’s 4 MONTHS! In this market, do you really think you can make that big of a name in four months?

    3) Never change your name. You’re in Oregon. I’m sure you wouldn’t be the only woman to refuse to take on a slave name.
