What advice would you give to a prospective law student who wants to practice in California?

On November 15, 2008 / By Real Estate Law Help / In California-Real-Estate-Law

Hey y’all

I’ve been meaning to go to Law School for a while, and now I’ve got everything together where I can go. I’ve always wanted to live in California, so I’d like to find out what would best to concentrate my studies on. What’s the best type of law for the California market from a practical, employment perspective?
Real Estate?
Also, would it be better to go to school in California, or is the reputation more important then the location?
I’ve got a good shot of getting in to Fordham, and they’ve got a good rep here in NY, but how does a school such as that sit out West?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

I am an Illinois attorney. With no disrespect to the California people, I would stay out of California for law school. In law school you learn the law by generalities — all states do this, all states have this type of law EXCEPT California and Louisana. California has many more laws, the laws do not always conform to the rest of the country, and they have laws about issues the rest of the US hasn’t even acknowledged yet.

Besides California laws being different, their rules for getting a law licenses are less restrictive — that means lots of unemployed lawyers. Why not go to law school in another state, pass the bar, then go to California.

If you want to practice in California do not go to law school on the opposite coast, unless it’s NYU, Columbia, UVa, Georgetown, Yale, or Harvard.

As long as you go to an ABA-approved law school, you can go to law school anywhere in the US and still be eligible to take the bar exam in California.

California doesn’t have reciprocity with other states so you cannot "waive" in to practice law in California if you are already licensed somewhere else. You would still have to take the bar exam.

Best type of law to specialize in - patent law, intellectual property, corporate law.
